TAX CREDITS FOR ENERGY SAVINGS!

On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed a stimulus bill (The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009) that made some significant changes to the energy efficiency tax credits.

The new American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 includes great benefits for homeowners to improve the energy efficiency of their primary residence. The expanded tax credits are a huge incentive because tax credits lower your tax liability directly.  For example if your federal tax bill totaled $3,000 a tax credit will reduce that amount directly.  Deductions only save you the percentage of the tax bracket you're in.

Just as a solid foundation is vital to building a house that will last insulation and air sealing are critical in creating an energy efficient building.  Quality HVAC technicians consider the shell of the home in order to properly size heating and cooling equipment.  Those who don't often oversize and cause other problems in which mechanicals short cycle resulting in energy loss, lack of proper dehumidification and ineeficent operation.  This wastes energy and can shorten the life expectancy of the unit.

A properly insulated home with a tight envelope will retain the energy you spend to create a comfortable environment.  This coupled with conservation techniques and proper equipment will set you on the path for true energy savings.

Here's a recap of the main energy tax credits applicable to homeowners from the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE)

"Economic Stimulus Act Extends Renewable Energy Tax Credits

The tax section of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provides a three-year extension of the production tax credit (PTC) for most renewable energy facilities, while offering expansions on and alternatives for tax credits on renewable energy systems. The extension keeps the wind energy PTC in effect through 2012, while keeping the PTC alive for municipal solid waste, qualified hydropower, and biomass and geothermal energy facilities through 2013. In addition, a two-year extension of the PTC for marine and hydrokinetic renewable energy systems will keep that tax credit in effect through 2013. The PTC provides a credit for every kilowatt-hour produced at new qualified facilities during the first 10 years of operation, provided the facilities are placed in service before the tax credit's expiration date. For 2008, biomass facilities fueled with dedicated energy crops ("closed-loop biomass"), as well as wind, solar, and geothermal energy facilities earned 2.1 cents per kilowatt-hour, while other qualified facilities earned 1 cent per kilowatt-hour."

 Why consider Air Krete®?

al_gore.jpg
Al Gore insulated his estate with Air Krete in 2007.

 · Air Krete offers a high R-value 3.9 per inch

· Air Krete flows around obstructions in the wall during installation preventing voids
· Air Krete does not shrink or settle in the wall, which eliminates unwanted air infiltration
· Air Krete will not burn - an important consideration especially in homes with older wiring
· Air Krete repels insects and rodents and will not support mold growth
· Air Krete is a true Green product.  It contains no Carcinogenic fibers, no CFCs or Formaldehyde.  Air Krete is odorless and free of toxins that may affect the chemically sensitive.

It's the only retrofit non-expanding foam that fills every nook and cranny in your walls and air seals while it insulates. Air Krete cementitious foam is installed from the exterior of your home so there is minimal inconvenience to you. It has a shaving cream consistency so as it's pumped into your wall it flows around receptacles, wires, pipes and other obstructions to fill the cavity. It does not settle, shrink or lose R-value over time. It stops air infiltration, as does every foam. This makes the biggest difference because without drafts your house will feel more comfortable.

Air Krete is the only 100% fireproof residential insulation. It is 100% non-toxic and environmentally safe. It does not contain carcinogenic fibers, asbestos, fiberglass, formaldehyde or chlorinated fluorocarbons. Air Krete is odor free and non-corrosive. Due to its cementitious nature it is 100% insect, rodent and mold resistant. Air Krete is a 100% green product. In fact, for their model 21st century green building the Audubon Society chose Air Krete to insulate their corporate headquarters in New York City.

Air Krete has been on the market since 1983. It is roughly the consistency of shaving cream when it is put in place, then it quickly becomes more rigid. It is typically installed in an existing wall by injecting it into holes drilled in the building exterior. Unlike other synthetic foam products, Air Krete is a cementitious material. This means that it is more closely related to concrete than to plastic. As a result it is almost completely odor free and contains no formaldehyde or any other known toxic substances. Air Krete must be installed by licensed applicators.

Air Krete is 100% non-toxic, free of CFC's and formaldehyde, free of asbestos and all other carcinogenic fibers. It is odor-free, has a high R-value, has no loss of R-value over time (non-shrink, non-settling), fireproof, with no by-products of combustion.

Air Krete cementitious foam is a magnesium-based product that is derived from seawater. Foam is the most effective product for retrofitting into existing walls because of its consistency. Foam will work its way around any obstacle, providing a near-100 percent wall fill (cellulose, for example, may not fill completely around bundles of wires or pipe runs and leave random voids). Unlike bottled foam insulation used to seal small gaps around pipes and wiring, Air Krete does not shrink or expand. In new construction, Air Krete can be installed after drywall is hung, but taping and texturing drywall joints should be completed after the foam has completely dried (usually about 48 hours). Cementitious foam is the most benign in regards to indoor air quality; when it is being applied into a wall there is no dust. It sounds like the perfect insulation. With an insulating value of 3.9 per inch, it would exceed R-21 in a 2×6 wall.

It completely seals the cavity preventing air leaks. It doesn't shrink. It won't burn or attract pests. It's non-toxic and excellent for people who are sensitive to chemicals.
